Fast-break lessons and Direk Joey’s impressions

June 18, 2008 5:10 PM

In order for the scholars to capture the essence of a song, Direk Joey had them memorize a classic in 30 minutes. After which, they would perform this in front of the whole class without the lyrics sheet plus their own interpretation of the song. Direk Joey and the rest would give them feedbacks on their presentation.

The class was divided into three groups and Ross’ group was up first. Ross was able to sing a few verses but soon buckled as he forgot the lyrics. Direk Joey was dismayed and called it a disaster. Van and Jet had the same problem the former had. To this, the renowned director reminded them that it wasn’t a question of memorizing but rather, knowing how to deliver and incorporating the melody.

Bugoy had his turn and their mentor was plainly impressed. Direk Joey was amazed at how sharp his musical memory was. Christian was able to pick up the song as well and both were applauded by the high standard director.

The next group was up with a classic, “You and I”. Iñaki like Ross had some disaster zones as he groped for the lyrics. Hansen didn’t miss a melody while Chivas got nervous and clammed up. To Miguel, the director said that he and Bugoy were the most pleasant so far. But when Liezel pitched her interpretation, the director was wowed and couldn’t say more. Though Laarni forgot the lyrics totally, she got it in the next try and was complimented by Direk Joey.

The final batch had Bea as their starter. The Performance Director pointed out that she got the melody but she lacked focus. Sheng and Bunny also impressed the director and was applauded by their classmates. Cris connected with the audience while Apple enjoyed herself as she performed.

In the end some were satisfied with their performances while some were motivated to work on their nervousness on stage. All this were crucial for Saturday but one thing more important than this was for them to attack the song based on their personality. Will they put this lesson to heart and be able to incorporate their personality in their Gala Night pieces? Stay tuned to Uberture for the latest updates!
